The hidden symbolism in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader runs deep, but one of the most important messages is also one of the least discovered. We'll explore Aslan's quest given to Prince Caspian, Reepicheep, Lucy Pevensie, Edmund Pevensie, Eustace Scrubb, and many other Narnians in the Chronicles of Narnia. Find out today why C.S. Lewis decided that the Seven Lost Lords of Narnia became lost in the first place.

    C.S. Lewis is a brilliant writer, that's all I have to say. This is explained very well. The only note I have is that I believe Octavian, also known as Augustus, was the second Roman emperor, not the first. (That was his uncle Julius).

      Thanks for watching and listening so closely! I must admit I only did a quick Wikipedia fact check when writing this episode. I Wiki can be wrong , of course. This is what their entry says: "Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus (born Gaius Octavius; 23 September 63 BC - 19 August AD 14), also known as Octavian (Latin: Octavianus), was the founder of the Roman Empire. " Is Wiki wrong on this one?

    • @saradowns7842

      @@IntotheWardrobe Maybe they are correct. I know his nephew was also named Octavius/Octavian, at least according to a history book I read in middle school as part of a homeschool curriculum, but maybe it is a name they both shared. (The nephew's sister was also named Octavia, the female version of the name). My understanding is that Julius Caeser, the uncle, began founding the empire, although there was a lot of unrest at the time, and Caeser Augustus, formally known as Octavian/Octavius, took over at his uncle's death. I believe Julius and Augustus are different people, but this entry looks like it may be mixing up their names...

    Brilliant piece! Made me reread my 1950's copy of Dawn Treader (published by Bles, 4th impression) and I find at the end of chapter 8, after the discovery of the Lord turned to gold, Rhince turns to Drinian and says 'Well, that's three. Only five more.' Wouldn't that be eight? Do other copies have this mistake? Never miss an Into the Wardrobe! Andrew

    Imagine if people could deal with their existential angst without falling into religious extremism and persecuting other people for failing to abide by YOUR beliefs. It's what this always comes down to, blame the scapegoats and use religion to justify persecuting them. Everything would be great if it wasn't for "those" people said every literal fascist ever. It's also a lot of disaffected men turning to ancient religion as justification to reimpose a patriarchal system that unsurprisingly benefits THEM. Society OWES them a nice house, a pretty wife, some kids and social respect and they think Christianity will bring back the 1950s for them somehow.

    C. S. Lewis wrote this book so that it could be readily understood by children. The thesis of this video stretches the material so far as to be ridiculous. It's overthinking on a grand scale, and a scale of overintellectualism (or perhaps it should be called underintelligence) that Lewis would scoff at. I'm content to scoff at it myself.

    • @IntotheWardrobe
      @IntotheWardrobe 7 днів тому

      I don't think Lewis would scoff at all. There's not question that this Immram is quite sophisticated, and a good book can always be enjoyed all the more by good analysis. The "For children" does not mean simplistic or dumbed down. The brilliance of Lewis was that he could write with such depth and yet still capture the imagination of children and adults alike. Narnia is meant to be enjoyed at multiple levels of understanding, but each level is enjoyable on its own. Further up, further in!

    • @farmergiles1065
      @farmergiles1065 7 днів тому

      @@IntotheWardrobe I agree about adult enjoyment, and I don't deny the multiple levels, and Lewis provided both intentionally. I disagree with the kind of "sophistication" espoused here, and I think Lewis would have particularly objected to attempts to find it here. He has written plenty of material on how he approached them, and where his sources of inspiration came from, and none of those were "sophisticated either. You may look for sophisticated writing in "That Hideous Strength" or "The Screwtape Letters", or his many essays. His genius was applied to a different endeavor in Narnia.

    This kind of reminds me of Re:Zero, where the sin archbishops represent the seven deadly sins, but not necessarily the way you would expect, for instance, Sloth isn't lazy, in fact he was the most active archbishop, but he only put in effort to a point. Once Subaru (the main character) had some much needed character development (he was . . . slothful . . . ) and really put in the effort to beat him, Sloth almost immediately caved.

    Dawn Treader has long been my favorite Narnia book, and I think it's very cool how well your theory lines up. It makes sense that they and/or their islands might stand for allegorical temptations if the whole story is analogous to the trials of the spiritual journey of life. Thank you for these wonderful two videos on the topic! Lewis is my favorite author, and it's great to see the meticulous depths of thought he put into these books. God be with you out there, everybody. ✝️ :)
